The charities and not-for-profit sector has seen a raft of proposed tax changes over the last twelve months, including DGR reforms and changes to the ‘in Australia’ requirement. This practical session examines what these reforms mean for the sector, including:

  • TR 2018/D1 - the ‘in Australia’ requirement:

    • Impact on DGR status

    • Div 50 income tax exemption

  • TR 2018/D2 - fringe benefits tax

    • What it means for religious practitioners

  • Update on deductible gift recipient reforms:

    • Red tape reduction

    • Power of the Commissioner of Taxation to exempt DGRs to register as charities

    • Abolition of certain public fund requirements

    • Increased powers of the ATO and ACNC

 PRESENTER

John McIntosh, Director, Charities Tax Advisory Service (CTAS), Sydney

John is a Chartered Accountant and the principal of the Charities Tax Advisory Service which he commenced in 2005.

The Charities Tax Advisory Service focuses on providing a range of advisory, accounting and compliance services to charities across Australia, from some of the smallest charities to some of Australia’s largest.

In addition to operating the Charities Tax Advisory Service, John has established and operates a salary packaging service for PBIs, and included in this service is a DIY salary packaging solution for PBIs. 

John is the Community Co-chair of the ATO’s Not-for-profit Stewardship Group and also attends the ACNC Professional User Group meetings.

John is currently a member of The Salvation Army’s National Audit and Risk Committee, The Salvation Army International Development Council and Chair of The Salvation Army International Development’s Finance and Risk Committee.

John has also previously been a board member of The Salvation Army Employment Plus from 2006 to 2018.

This webinar is suitable for accountants and lawyers advising not for profits – Australia wide. This webinar is for practitioners with some knowledge in this area and looking to improve their knowledge.
