It’s vital that you have a strong understanding of the various tax exemptions available to charities. After all, it’s these exemptions that often make running a charity viable. This presentation will provide an overarching assessment of the state-based tax concessions that are available to charities and will cover:

  • State definitions of charity – do we have any consistency?
  • Examination of State tax exemptions available to charities, including:
    • stamp duty – applying the character test
    • land tax – what do we mean by “use”?
    • payroll tax – who is exempt?
  • Focus on recent cases, including:
    •  Grain Growers Limited
    •  Word Investments

Andrew Lind, Director, Corney & Lind Lawyers, Brisbane      

Andrew was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and The High Court of Australia in 1990.

Andrew has served on many Not-for-Profit boards. He is the Deputy Chair of the Queensland Law Society Not-for-Profit Law Committee and a member of the Law Council of Australia Not-for-Profit & Charities Committee.

Nina Brewer, Senior Lawyer, Corney & Lind Lawyers, Brisbane 

Nina was admitted as a Legal Practitioner by the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2013, following extensive legal training with Corney & Lind Lawyers. She holds a Bachelor of Laws from Bond University and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the Queensland College of Law.

Nina assists clients in a broad range of areas, including: Corporate/Commercial law; Property law; Not-for-profit and charity law; and Wills and estates.
